This is a project that I have had on the fence for a long time, with a simple goal: we are looking to help people with improving their writing so that they also improve within the game! Whether you are new to the game, or a veteran of years, there is something that all of us can improve on when it comes to writing.
We are not trying to claim ourselves as the greatest writers in the world, or even in the game; we are not. Some of us do not even have a degree in the field. Most of us do not. We are simply trying to help those out that we can through feedback, challenges, or anything we can think of! We will accept all willing applicants, as well as accepting people who are recommended to us.
You are only going to reap the rewards based on your willingness to learn! If you are coming in with the intent of shooting the idea down, then you will gain nothing from it, but if you come in here with an open mind, we will do our best for you.
This is an in-character wrestling school, but with an out of character way to build your writing skills.
IC Information: The community has been growing with things within our realm that are open for everybody to be able to use, ranging from the Velvet Rabbit, This Is Awesome, or even Ring Rust Cafe. The Fenix Wrestling Academy is just another thing that would join the ranks of things that have become available for the rest of the community!
The owner and founder of the Fenix Wrestling Academy is Tara Docherty (Fenix).
There are other trainers available. Currently: Seth Evans, Bill Dalton, Sabin Spencer.
Location: One location in Hartford, CT, and one in Miami, FL.
If you are interested in becoming a trainer, it is my hope that you would have a character that would be your designated trainer...whether an active wrestler, or someone you create just for this sole purpose, but to have an in-character trainer, it would be expected that you are taking on the out of character responsibilities of training people who have applied for our help.
For in-character, this school would provide your new or existing characters with a bit of history to characters that are already in the business, and thus, have connections.
OOC:
We are willing to work with ANYONE who feels that they could benefit from the wrestling school. This could be a rookie to the game, or a veteran of multiple years. We will also take people of all skill levels, and look to assist with helping people become comfortable with the different styles of writing.
TRAINERS: Do not overwhelm yourself. If you are certain that you are capable of helping people improve their game, then we should be working one-on-one with anybody who has applied, and take on the number of students that you are comfortable with handling.
WRITING CHALLENGES:
There are going to be different challenges that are separated by beginner, intermediate, advanced, and beyond.
Word Count Challenge: 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000. A trainer may go beyond that with any of their students, but the goal for the word count challenge is to of course hit the word count, but also to maintain a flow throughout the duration of the roleplay!
Perspectives: First-Person Perspective, Third-Person Perspective, Narrative, Shoot, Script, Mixed. More to add? [If anyone can think of a different perspective to keep in mind, we will work with that.]
Each perspective does come with its own challenges. Each one will be explored during that.
SHOOT: When we are testing your shoot, then there should be ZERO ACTION SEQUENCES. It should focus on your ability to shoot on your opponent without repeating yourself, and always maintaining that flow.
Accent? One fun thing that I have for one of my characters is their accent; they have a thick accent, and so I must figure out how to spell it out so that when people are reading, they could visualize that the accent is there.
Past Tense vs. Present Tense: For story or character development sections, maintain your tense!
Challenges! Your trainer may choose a writing challenge that they want to see you accomplish. This could mean focusing on a certain subject, focusing on a specific quote, a television show, or anything. It is up to the trainer on this creativity; however, the trainer should keep in mind that the goal is to help. Part of helping you is challenging you.
DETAILS! How much is too much? How little is too little? There have been times that I have read roleplays where it felt like the writer was trying to hit a specific word count for a college paper.
Ultimately, there are multiple things that we are going to be looking for, and as it comes with writing, fundamentals are a necessity. This includes things such as the past tense and present tense, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. There are going to be other things that we will look into as we advance. For example: coding. Some of this does come down to just personal preference, so it is always important to keep in mind: be happy with what you are writing! If you are happy with it, then that is all that matters.
What does this mean for the students?
Have an open mind. Be willing to accept critique; commit to the challenges presented to you! If you truly feel that something was wrongly critiqued, then approach us respectfully to explain your reasoning. Be respectful of the trainers; they are here to help you by giving you feedback, and challenging you. They do not have to do this! Choose your preferred trainer not by your friendship, but who you think can teach you the most.
What does this mean for the trainers?
Trainers should not be putting themselves into situations that they cannot handle! If you already have one student, and you feel that’s all the time you have for; leave it at that. If you feel you can take more on; take more on. Your work should not suffer because you are wanting to help others.
The goal on top of everything else is to give everybody of every skill level a place where they can learn more. Again, repeating myself: whether you are new to the game, or have been doing it for twenty-years or more, there is always something more that you are able to learn! We are going to do our best to help everyone out in this aspect. Feel free to sign up with new or existing characters as a student, or if you feel that you could be beneficial as a trainer, feel free to apply.
